PM Modi Unveils ₹35,440-Crore Agricultural Reforms to Boost Farmers’ Prosperity
By Harry Ward
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced two new agriculture initiatives in New Delhi: the PM Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana and the Dalhan Aatmanirbharta Mission (Pulses Self-Reliance Mission). The combined outlay is ₹35,440 crore, and Modi said the programs are intended to strengthen the rural economy, support innovation, and improve long-term food and nutrition security.
At a special Krishi programme at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), Modi also inaugurated and dedicated projects worth ₹5,450 crore across agriculture, animal husbandry, fisheries, and food processing. Foundation stones were laid for additional projects totaling ₹815 crore.
The PM Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana is backed by ₹24,000 crore and is planned to cover 100 aspirational agricultural districts. It will bring 36 government schemes under a single coordinated framework, with district-level plans tailored to local soil, water, and crop conditions and an emphasis on productivity, sustainability, and market access.
The Dalhan Aatmanirbharta Mission has an outlay of ₹11,440 crore and aims to expand pulse cultivation by 35 lakh hectares, with the article stating it would benefit nearly two crore pulse farmers. It targets increased production of tur, urad, and masoor, and includes procurement support and fair pricing, with the goal of reducing reliance on pulse imports.
Modi also highlighted recent agriculture-related figures cited in the program, including increases in foodgrain, fruit and vegetable production, expanded micro-irrigation coverage, Soil Health Card distribution, and payouts under PM Fasal Bima Yojana. He pointed to women’s participation through efforts such as Namo Drone Didis, Lakhpati Didis, and ‘Krishi Sakhis’ promoting natural farming across 17,000 clusters.
Why it matters
- The two new schemes represent a large public investment aimed at boosting farm productivity, sustainability, and market access.
- The pulses mission targets expanded acreage and procurement support, with the stated goal of improving nutritional security and reducing import dependence.
- The district-focused approach is designed to coordinate existing programs and tailor plans to local conditions rather than using a one-size-fits-all model.
What to do next
- Farmers and local stakeholders in the targeted districts can watch for district-level plans and details on how existing schemes will be coordinated under the new framework.
- Pulse growers can look for updates on procurement support, pricing provisions, and how the acreage expansion target will be implemented.
