Anaplasmosis Rides In on Ticks and Flies in Summer, and It Takes the Old Cows First

Most of the summer troubles a Montana outfit watches for show up fast and obvious. A cow bloats, a calf goes lame, a bunch stacks under a tree in a hailstorm. Anaplasmosis is different. It works slow, it hides in the older cows you’d never worry about, and by the time you see one down, the disease has usually been moving through the herd for weeks.

It’s a blood parasite. The organism gets into a cow’s red blood cells and her own immune system starts tearing those cells apart to clear it. That’s the whole problem in a nutshell: the cow ends up badly anemic, and an anemic animal on summer range in the heat doesn’t have much reserve. What makes it sneaky is that young cattle can carry it and shrug it off. The disease saves its worst for mature cows, and the older and heavier-bred she is, the harder it hits.

How it gets into the herd

Anaplasmosis spreads any way infected blood moves from one animal to another. Ticks are the classic carrier, and Montana has plenty of tick country in the foothills and brushy draws. Biting flies — horse flies, deer flies, stable flies, and the horn flies already working your cattle — move it too, carrying a smear of blood from a carrier animal to a clean one.

Then there’s the blood you move yourself. A single needle run through a whole chute-line of cattle will carry it. So will a dehorning tool, a tattoo pliers, or a castrating knife that isn’t cleaned between animals. Ranchers who’d never think of anaplasmosis as their own doing sometimes spread it at branding or preg-check by reusing the same needle down the whole bunch. Change needles often when you’re processing, and disinfect anything that draws blood before it moves to the next head. It’s cheap insurance against a disease that’s expensive to treat and impossible to fully cure.

The part that trips people up is the carrier animal. A cow that survives an infection usually recovers and looks completely normal, but she carries the organism for the rest of her life and becomes a reservoir the flies and ticks feed off. Bring in a carrier cow or bull from a herd where anaplasmosis is established, and you’ve seeded your own. It’s worth knowing the health status of animals you buy, especially older, from regions where the disease runs harder.

What it looks like on the ground

The first clinical case is easy to miss because it doesn’t look like a wreck. It looks like one good cow that’s dropped off the bunch, standing alone, breathing harder than the weather calls for. Because she’s anemic, she’ll be weak and she may act aggressive or disoriented if you push her — a normally gentle cow that comes at you can be a cow whose brain isn’t getting enough oxygen. Look at the whites of the eyes and the gums. Instead of pink, you’ll see pale, and often a yellow, jaundiced cast as the breakdown of red cells backs up. Urine can darken. Milk drops off. Pregnant cows may abort.

Here’s the hard rule: don’t run a suspected anaplasmosis cow hard, and don’t rope-and-drag her to a chute if you can help it. An anemic animal that’s already short on oxygen can die from the stress and exertion of being worked. Get a vet involved early. Treatment exists and works when it’s caught in time, but a cow that’s already flat and gasping is a long shot, and the handling that gets her to treatment can be the thing that kills her.

Cutting your risk through the vector season

You can’t sterilize a pasture full of ticks and flies, but you can knock the numbers down and slow the spread. The same fly control that saves you weight loss from horn flies — tags, pour-ons, dust bags, oilers, whatever fits your setup — also cuts one of the routes anaplasmosis travels. Staying on top of biting flies through July and August does double duty.

Talk to your vet about whether a control program makes sense for your country. In herds where anaplasmosis is known to be present, feeding a labeled antibiotic in the mineral through the vector season is a common approach to keep infections from turning into clinical disease. It’s not a fit for everyone, it has to be done under a vet’s direction, and it doesn’t clear carriers — it manages the risk during the months when flies and ticks are moving blood around. Whether you use it or not comes down to your history and your area.

The main thing is to keep anaplasmosis on your list. When a solid old cow that’s never given you trouble turns up alone and pale in August, don’t write her off as heat or old age. Get a good look at her eyes, keep her quiet, and get some help. The rest of the herd is telling you something’s already loose in it.
