LDWF Uses Drone to Catch Illegal Oyster Harvest
Drone Technology Aids in Enforcement of Oyster Harvest Regulations
Louisiana wildlife officials are employing drone surveillance to combat illegal oyster harvesting.
What happened
The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) is utilizing drone technology to monitor and enforce regulations against illegal oyster harvesting. On February 3, agents cited a man in Terrebonne Parish for harvesting oysters during a closed season in the Sister Lake Oyster Seed Reservation.
The incident occurred around 4:45 a.m. when agents launched a drone to patrol the area. The drone footage captured a vessel actively harvesting oysters, despite the area being closed since December 29. The individual was identified as 47-year-old Angel Torres, who was found with approximately 900 pounds of oysters.
Torres received multiple citations, including harvesting during a closed season, violating logbook requirements, and failing to possess a commercial fishing license. The 900 pounds of oysters were returned to the water, and the harvesting equipment was seized.
This case is part of a broader enforcement effort, as LDWF agents have successfully used drones to detect illegal activities in other instances. For example, on December 20, a man was cited for harvesting oysters from a polluted area in Calcasieu Parish.
Why it matters
- Drone technology enhances monitoring capabilities for wildlife enforcement.
- Illegal harvesting poses risks to oyster populations and ecosystem health.
- Public awareness of regulations is crucial for sustainable fishing practices.
