1100 Projects in Pipeline for Agri Sector; Govt to Invest Over ₹42,000 Crore
By Harry Ward
India’s government says it will roll out more than 1,100 agriculture-sector projects worth ₹42,000 crore on Oct. 11, 2025. The projects are expected to cover agriculture infrastructure, animal husbandry, fisheries, and food processing, and are slated to be launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The plan was outlined by Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development Shivraj Singh Chouhan at a press conference in New Delhi, with the timing tied to the upcoming Rabi sowing season. Chouhan said the launch will include two initiatives: the PM Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana and the Self-Reliance in Pulses Mission.
According to Chouhan, the new push is framed around food security, higher farm incomes, and nutritional sustainability. He also pointed to reported gains since 2014, including nearly 40% growth in food grain output and exports totaling more than 4 crore tonnes of agricultural produce, while noting that pulses remain an area where India still imports significant quantities.
The Self-Reliance in Pulses Mission sets targets through 2030–31, including expanding pulse cultivation from 27.5 to 31 million hectares, increasing production from 24.2 to 35 million tonnes, and raising productivity from 880 kg to 1,130 kg per hectare. The plan includes research on higher-yielding and more resilient pulse varieties, distribution of certified seed and free seed kits, and setting up 1,000 processing units in pulse-growing regions with a ₹25 lakh subsidy per unit.
The PM Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana is aimed at narrowing productivity gaps in 100 low-performing agricultural districts, with measures described as including irrigation expansion, crop diversification, credit access, and storage improvements. Chouhan said the program will be tracked through a real-time dashboard managed by NITI Aayog, and he tied the Oct. 11 launch date to the birth anniversary of Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan.
Why it matters
- The government is proposing a large, multi-sector investment package—₹42,000 crore across more than 1,100 projects—spanning crops, livestock, fisheries, and food processing.
- Pulses are a stated priority, with specific acreage, production, and productivity targets set through 2030–31 alongside seed distribution and new processing capacity.
- The plan includes district-level productivity efforts and expanded use of digital monitoring and rural service delivery through institutions like PACS and NITI Aayog’s dashboard.
What to do next
- Watch for details released around Oct. 11, 2025, including project locations, funding timelines, and implementation rules for the two named initiatives.
- Look for follow-up information on how seed distribution, processing-unit subsidies, and district selection will be carried out and monitored.
