Montana boosts hunter ed as youth interest declines
Montana Enhances Hunter Education Amid Declining Youth Participation
The state is increasing support for hunter education programs as youth interest in hunting continues to wane.
What happened
Montana’s Department of Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) is ramping up its investment in hunter education. This decision comes in response to declining interest in hunting among young people, which is attributed to various factors such as busy schedules for families and a shortage of volunteer instructors.
In the past year, FWP hired seven education technicians to support its regional offices. These technicians will assist with the firearm safety program, which is mandatory for anyone born after January 1, 1985, before they can obtain a hunting license. According to Greg Lemon, the administrator of FWP’s Communication & Education Division, this initiative represents a significant boost for the program.
Recruiting new hunters is essential for the agency, as license sales contribute significantly to funding wildlife and fisheries habitat improvements. However, the agency faces challenges in attracting both students and instructors, particularly in securing venues for in-person classes.
A broader cultural shift away from hunting as a family activity is also impacting participation rates. A recent survey indicated a decline in the number of American hunters, with figures dropping from 16.7 million to 14.4 million, a decrease of nearly 14%. Despite this trend, Montana has seen only a slight decline in resident hunting license sales since 2016.
Why it matters
- Increased investment in hunter education aims to counter declining youth participation.
- License sales are crucial for funding wildlife conservation efforts.
- A cultural shift away from hunting may impact future generations of hunters.
What to do next
- Explore potential incentives for both instructors and students to boost participation.
- Consider strategies to address scheduling conflicts for families and volunteers.
