Most of the summer killers act fast. A cow bloats and she’s gone by noon. Larkspur drops her in an afternoon. Anaplasmosis is different. It moves through the herd quietly, one animal at a time, and by the time you find a cow standing off by herself gasping, the parasite has already been in her blood for a month. In a lot of Montana herds the first real clue is an older cow dead in the corner of the pasture with no other explanation.
It’s caused by a tiny organism that infects red blood cells. The animal’s own immune system destroys those infected cells trying to clear it, and the cow ends up severely anemic. Everything you see clinically comes back to that: she runs out of red cells faster than she can build them.
How it gets into the herd
Anaplasmosis spreads any way blood moves from one animal to another. Ticks carry it. Horse flies, deer flies, and stable flies carry it on their mouthparts when they bite one cow and then the next. And people spread it more than they’d like to admit — reusing the same needle across a chute full of cattle, or running the same dehorner or tattoo pliers through a bunch without cleaning them. A blood-covered needle is a very efficient way to move this disease down a line of cows.
That’s why it shows up in the warm months. Fly and tick pressure builds through June and peaks in the heat of July and August, and that’s the window when new infections stack up. It can be here already or ride in on purchased cattle, especially older animals from areas where it’s common. A carrier cow looks completely normal and can seed the whole outfit.
What it looks like in a Montana pasture
Age matters a lot with this disease. Calves under a year rarely get sick even when infected. Yearlings and two-year-olds may get through it with a mild case. It’s the mature cows and bulls that get hammered, and the risk climbs with age. A cow well into her productive years can die from the same exposure a heifer shrugs off.
Watch for an animal that drops off the bunch and won’t keep up. She’s weak, breathing hard after any movement, and her gums and the skin around her eyes look pale instead of pink. As the red cells break down she may go slightly jaundiced — a yellow cast to the whites of the eyes or the udder skin. Late in the course, a cow that’s oxygen-starved from anemia can turn aggressive and dangerous. More than one person has been hurt trying to doctor a down anaplasmosis cow that suddenly came up swinging.
One thing to keep in mind: chasing or stressing a badly anemic cow can kill her outright. If she’s that far along, pushing her to the corral hard can be the last straw. Move sick animals slow or not at all until you’ve talked to your vet about treatment.
Bred cows can abort. And an animal that survives becomes a lifelong carrier — she recovers and looks fine but keeps the infection in her blood, ready to be picked up by the next fly or needle.
Keeping it out and slowing it down
There’s no cheap fix once it’s running, so most of the effort goes into prevention. A few practical things carry the most weight:
- Fly and tick control. The same horn fly and face fly programs you’re already running — backrubbers, dust bags, pour-ons, fly tags — cut down on the biting insects that spread it. Keeping the pressure off pays double when anaplasmosis is in the country.
- Change needles. This is the one you fully control. Use a fresh needle per animal, or at least change them often, and clean any instrument that draws blood — dehorners, castrating knives, tattoo pliers, ear taggers — between cattle. It’s a nuisance in a full chute, but it’s the difference between one sick cow and a dozen.
- Feed-grade antibiotics in the risk season. Chlortetracycline delivered through mineral or feed is a common tool in areas where anaplasmosis is established, used through the fly season to suppress the organism. This falls under veterinary oversight now, so it takes a script and a plan with your vet — but it’s the standard control program where the disease is a regular problem.
- Know what you’re buying. Older cattle brought in from high-incidence regions can be silent carriers. Ask questions before you turn new cows in with yours.
If you’ve had an unexplained dead cow or two in the heat of summer, especially older animals, anaplasmosis is worth ruling out. A blood test through your vet will tell you whether it’s in your herd. Once you know, you can build a fly-control and management plan around it instead of geting surprised by it every August.
