The Alfalfa Leaf Is Where the Protein Lives, and the Rake You Run at Noon Leaves Half of It on the Ground

Walk out into a field of standing first-cutting alfalfa and pull a plant apart. The stem is mostly stalk — fiber the cow chews on but doesn’t get much from. The leaves are where the feed is: the protein, the energy, the stuff that makes an alfalfa test come back with numbers you want to see. Strip the leaves off and you’ve got a bundle of stems worth about as much as coarse grass hay.

That matters because the leaf is also the part you lose first, and you lose it in the field, quietly, in the hours between swathing and baling. Nobody sees it happen. You see it later, when the test comes back thinner than the crop looked standing, or when the cows sort through the stack all winter and leave you a windrow of stems in the feed ground.

Why the leaves fall off

Alfalfa dries unevenly. The leaves give up moisture fast — they’re thin and there’s a lot of surface. The stems hold water long after the leaves have gone crisp. So you end up in a spot where the stem still needs to cure but the leaf is already dry enough to snap. Every time you touch that windrow while the leaves are brittle, some of them shatter and drop through to the ground.

Raking is the biggest offender. Run a rake through a windrow that’s dried down too far and you can watch the leaf litter fall out the back. Tedding does the same if you do it late. Baling adds another round of loss, especially with a hard-driving baler pulling dry material through the pickup. The drier the crop, the more comes off, and it’s always the leaves — the fiber-heavy stems ride through fine.

The general rule agronomists have preached for years holds up in the field: below roughly 40 percent moisture, leaf loss climbs fast. Above that, the leaves are still tough enough to stay attached. So the trick is timing your mechanical passes for when the crop is still leathery, not when it’s crunchy.

Rake in the morning, not the middle of the day

The cheapest fix costs nothing. Rake when there’s a little dew on the crop, early in the morning or in the cool of evening, when the leaves have taken up enough moisture to bend instead of break. That toughness is your friend. A windrow raked at seven in the morning holds its leaves; the same windrow raked at two in the afternoon, dry and hot, sheds them.

Merging instead of raking helps too, if you’ve got the equipment for it, because it handles the crop gentler. Same idea with a wide swath behind the swather — lay it out flat and wide so it cures more evenly and you need fewer aggressive passes to get it dry. The fewer times steel touches dry leaves, the more feed ends up in the bale.

There’s a balance here and it cuts both ways. Rake too wet and the windrow won’t finish drying, the bottom stays green, and you’re back to the risk of a stack that heats. Rake too dry and you feed the field. The window is real but it’s not razor thin — mornings and evenings give you plenty of it if you’re willing to work around the middle of the day.

Bale it before it’s bone dry

The same logic runs into the baling. Alfalfa for small squares generally wants to come in somewhere around 18 percent moisture, big packages a little lower. Push much below that chasing a guarantee against heat and you start snapping leaves in the pickup. If you’re fighting weather and the crop keeps drying past where you want it, that’s the case for a hay preservative or for baling in the cooler, damper part of the day when the leaves toughen back up.

A moisture tester earns its keep here. So does the simple habit of grabbing a handful out of a fresh bale and looking at it. If the leaves are still on the stems and the whole flake holds together, you did it right. If you shake it and a shower of green flakes falls out, you baled too dry and left the difference in the field.

First cutting is usually the biggest tonnage and the best-quality hay you’ll make all year. It’s worth slowing down for. The cut date sets your protein ceiling, but everything after that — the swath, the rake, the bale — decides how much of that ceiling actually ends up in front of a cow in February. Save the leaves and you save the feed value you already grew.
